More on Flores

The city of Flores occupies an island in Lake Peten Itza, with the new part of town on the mainland. The two parts are linked by a causeway. Flores dates back to the 13th century when the Itza people established the city as their capital. This was the last Mayan group to resist the Spanish conquerors, holding out until 1697, when the Spanish finally penetrated the city, then called Tayasal or Tah Itzá, and destroyed it.

After Tayasal was destroyed, the Spanish reestablished the settlement as Flores. Today it is a quaint city huddled together within the lake.
