More on Frauenfeld

The picturesque Old Town of Frauenfeld today has many well-preserved houses from its medieval past. Although the city traces its history to the late 12th century, when it grew out nof a small village, the area has been inhabited since Roman times, as evidenced by the discovery of graves and Roman ruins.

Frauenfeld was mentioned for the first time in 1246. Originally written as Vrowinvelt, it was the home of the knightly Hörigen family and other knightly families allied to the Habsburg (Austrian) throne. Apart from brief periods in its history, Frauenfeld was ruled by the Habsburg until 1460, when it was taken over by the Swiss Confederation.
