More on Freeport
Freeport was established as a free trade zone in 1955 on former swamp and shrubland. A land grant of 50,000 acres was given to Virginian financier Wallace Groves to develop the area. Within a couple of decades, it has grown into the second most populous city in the Bahamas.
Today the economy of Freeport is highly dependent on tourism. It receives over a million tourists every year, although the numbers has declined somewhat since 2004, following two major hurricances. The city has many beautiful white-sand beaches, among them Coral Beach, Williams Town Beach, Xanadu Beach, Taino Beach, Barbarry Beach, Plane-crash Beach and Gold Rock Beach.
