Geneva is the second biggest city in Switzerland, after Zurich, and the biggest within Romandie, the French-speaking part of the country. It covers 15.86 sq km (6.12 sq mi) and has a population of 192,000 (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 1.24 million people. The city is located at a height of approximately 375 m (1,230 ft) above sea level, at the point where the Rhone river exits Lake Geneva.

Geneva is the third most important financial center in Europe behind London and Zurich. It is also considered one of the most compact cities in the world, and the fourth most expensive.

The earliest mention of Geneva in history was in AD 121, when it was a fortified settlement. In more recent history, it became the seat of the League of Nations in 1919. The economy of the city received a massive boost when it became the European headquarters of the United Nations after the Second World War.

Geneva experiences a temperate climate. July is the warmest month, with average temperatures of around 25.3°C (77.5°F). January is the coldest month, when temperatures drop to around -1.9°C (28.6°F).

Visiting Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva International Airport (GVA) is just 4 km to the northwest of the city, near the Swiss-French border. The airport, which also serves neighboring France, receives flights from major cities in Europe and North America.

You can also take the train to Geneva from cities across Western Europe. The Swiss Federal Railway has train services between Geneva and Zurich, St Gallen, Basel and Bern departing every hour.
