More on Glarus

Glarus as we see today is an example of 19th century urban planning. The streets are laid out in a grid pattern. Although Glarus has been established since the 9th century, the town was rebuilt afresh after a major fire destroyed the old town in 1861.

Glarus is noted for its association with Swiss Reformer Huldrych Zwingli, who held a position in the Roman Catholic church in Glarus for ten years. In his early career, he became involved in politics, was honored by the pope, but when the Reformation swept through Switzerland, found himself breaking away with the Catholic Church.

Today Glarus has a well-preserved Old Town, though most of the buildings are from the 19th century. The town is blessed with a scenic location with views of surrounding lakes, mountains and valley. It is popular among hikers and skiers.
