More on Glossop

Although the area around Glossop dates back eas early as the Bronze Age, the town is believed to have been established during the Anglo-Saxon period, as its name is of Saxon origin. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the early days, it was a village called Glossopdale. It industrialized in the 19th century, as cotton mills were constructed there, turning Glossop into a center for wool processing, printing, and the manufacture of calico, a type of coarse cotton.

The 20th century witnessed a general decline in the cotton industry of Glossop. The town was particularly hard hit by the Great Depression of 1929 which sent unemployment rate up to 14%, and even reaching 55% by 1931. During that time of large-scale unemployment, most of the cotton mills in Glossop lay empty and neglected.

The Second World War was a boon to Glossop, as it brought a round of economic activities to the town. The factories, left empty for years, were deployed for the manufacture of military hardware, munitions and machine tools. After the war, the town diversified its economy into a wide range of industries.
