More on Godalming

The earliest mention of Godalming was the in the Anglo-Saxon period, although human habitation in the area is believed to go back even further. The name is supposed to mean "the family of Godhelm", and appeared in the will of King Alfred the Great.

Following Norman Conquest, the Manor of Godalming was held by William the Conqueror. In the Domesday Book of 1086, it was listed as Godelminge. In 1300 Godalming was granted a market charter permitting it to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. The town developed into a center for woollen textile. There was a cottage industry in knitting and weaving which led to the production of materials such as stockings and leatherwork.

Today Godalming has a well-preserved old town. Over two hundred buildings here have been designated heritage buildings with Grade I or II listings. They include beautiful timber-framed houses and those of brick.
