Gruyères (German: Greyerz) is a small, well-preserved medieval village in Alpine Switzerland. It is located in Gruyère district, Fribourg canton, on the upper part of the Saane river valley. The village is surrounded by the Alps. The entire area of Gruyères covers 28.39 sq km (10.96 sq mi), inclusive of the Saane valley and parts of the Fribourg alps. It has a population fewer than 2,000 people (2011 estimate), the majority speaking French.

The village of Gruyères is situated at an average altitude of 810 m (2,657 ft). The highest point within the Gruyères municipality is the summit of Mount Moléson, at 2002 m above sea level.

With its charming houses, built between the 15th and the 17th century, Gruyères is a popular tourist destination, particularly in summer. It only has one main street, which opens into a square with fountain. The whole place is pedestrianized, so visitors coming by car has to park in the parking lot just outside the village.

In addition to the main village of Gruyères, the municipality also includes the village of Épagny to the north and Pringy to the west. Farther away are the village of Saussivue to the south and a few isolated farmhouses.

Take the train to Aigle, and from there change trains for Gruyères.

  1. Château de Gruyères
    Castle on a hill above Gruyères. It was the residence of the counts of Gruyères until the mid-16th century. Today it is a museum displaying 16th century Flemish tapestries and booty from the Battle of Murten (1476).
