Hamilton (Maori: Kirikiriroa) is the main city within the fourth-largest urban area in New Zealand. Located in the Waikato Reion of North Island, some 130 km (80 mi) to the south of Auckland, it covers 98 sq km (37.8 sq mi) and has a population of 143,000 people (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 203,000 people.

Hamilton is today one of the fastest growing urban areas in New Zealand. It is a center of education and research. The city is home to the University of Waikato and the Waikato Institute of Technology. These institutions are at the forefront of research in support of New Zealand's agriculture.Hamilton experiences a maritime climate. While snow is rare here, ground frosts are common, as are fogs on winter mornings. The warmest months are January and February, when the average high temperature touches 24°C. Coldest month is July, when the average low temperature drops to 4°C. July is also the wettest month, receiving 126 mm of rainfall.

Until the arrival of the first Europeans here, the Hamilton area comprised a collection of Maori villages. The Maori name of the area, Kirikiriroa, means "long stretch of gravel". The earliest Europeans to settle here were missionaries, in the 1830s. A road was built to connect Hamilton to Auckland in 1867, and in 1877, a railway line was also built.
With its many tertiary institutions, Hamilton today has a high student population, which translates into a vibrant cultural scene. The entertainment precinct of the city revolves around the Hamilton Central neighborhood, with its high concentration of bars and restaurants.

Visiting Hamilton
You can easily reach Hamilton by bus from Auckland as well as from other major towns on the North Island. Several bus companies serve the Auckland-Hamilton route.
