The history of Hatfield goas back to Anglo-Saxon times. It was originally known as Hetfelle. By AD 970, when King Edgar gave 5000 acres of it to the monastery of Ely, it was known as Haethfeld.The next mention of Hatfield was in 1226, when King Henry III granted a market charter so that Hatfield could hold a weekly market and a four-day fair. As the charter was granted to the Bishops of Ely, the town became known then as Bishop's Hatfield.
By the first half of the 20th century, Hatfield became associated with the aerospace industry when the de Havilland aircraft factory was sited there to produce small biplanes. During the Second World War the factory produced fighter bombers for the Royal British Air Face. The site was eventually closed down in 1993.
Visiting Hatfield
From London, take the A1(M) motorway until Exit 2, then continue on the A1001 road. At the roundabout, take a 9 o'clock turn to Travellers Lane to reach Hatfield. At the time the Domesday Book survey was taken in 1086, it still belonged to the Abbey of Ely.
