More on High Wycombe

A settlement has existed in the High Wycombe area going back to Roman times. The Romans built a villa here around AD 150-170. It has been a market town since the 12th century. High Wycombe is noted for the industry of making lace and linen cloth. During medieval times, it was a stopover for travelers journeying between London and Oxford.

During the 19th century, High Wycombe developed into a center for furniture making. The terraced houses from that period were built to house workers in the furniture industry. Its population grew rapidly, from 13,000 people in 1881, to 29,000 in 1928. By the 20th century, however, the furniture industry was in decline, and the many housing estates of High Wycombe degenerated into slums.

The High Wycombe town center underwent facelift in the 1960s. A concrete culvert was built for the River Wye, while some of the old buildings town down. As a result, some of the characteristic cottages of old made way for "modern" buildings that are today regarded as "aesthetically challenged".
