Hitchin got its name from a 7th century Brittonic tribe, the Hicce, who occupied the area when the Anglo-Saxons did a compilation of tribes called the Tribal Hidage. It appeared in the Domesday Book survey of 1086 as a Royal Manor.

St Mary's Church, the parish church of Hitchin, dates back to 1190, though the present building was erected in the 15th century. The town prospered on the wool trade, particularly from the 16th century. It was largely rural until the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, when Hitchin developed into a grain trading center.
