Holiday Homes in France
Holiday Homes are called gîte in France. They are privately owned, usually converted from farm houses or their outbuildings. As they are left unused for much of the year, they are often let out to travelers. To qualify, these gîtes have to undergo inspection and grading by the Gites de France, which registers some 42,500 gîtes all over the country.

Gites de France has a brochure detailing some 2,500 gîtes where you can book. In addition, the regional offices of Gites de France has its own information on the gîtes within the region open to booking.
If you wish to stay in a holiday home, be sure to book well in advance, perhaps months ahead, and during the off-season, when the owners themselves are not using the place.
