The history of Ingolstadt goes back to AD 806, when it was first mentioned in one of Charlemagne's documents. The city became the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt between 1392 and 1447. Ingolstadt was the city where Adam Weishaupt founded the German secret society, the Illuminati, on 1 May, 1776.

One of the most curious exhibits at the Ingolstadt City Museum are the remains of King Gustavus Adolphus' horse, which was shot during the Swedish siege of the city. Ingolstadt had a medieval defensive fortress erected in 1537, and now houses the Museum of the Bavarian Army. The future French president Charles de Gaulle was detained there as a prisoner of war during the First World War.
