Jamaica is located 145 km (90 mi) to the south of Cuba and 191 km (119 mi) to the west of Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola. The name Jamaica comes from the local Arawak language of its natives, Taíno, who called the island Xaymaca, meaning "land of springs".

Jamaica was a Spanish possession known as Santiago until 1655, when it became an English and later British colony until independence in 1962. It remains a Commonwealth realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state. Jamaica has a population of 2.8 million people. It is the third most populous English-speaking country in the Americas after the United States and Canada. Kingston is the largest city and capital of Jamaica.
