More on Jonava
Jonava was founded in the 18th century. Until the Second World War, it had a sizable Jewish community which was liquidated by the Nazis. After the war, Jonava grew to become one of the four major industrial cities in Lithuania. It has the biggest fertilizer factory among the Baltic states.
Jonava suffered a major environmental disaster when a massive explosion took place at the fertilizer factory on 20 March, 1989, causing some 7,500 tonnes of liquid ammonia to be leaked into the environment. Seven people died in the fire while another 29 was made handicapped, with countless more suffering from breathing and heart problems.
