According to archaeologists, the Jyväskylä has been inhabited since 3,500 years ago. This is based of discovery of Stone Age artifacts in the area. The oldest documents mentioning Jyväskylä were records of taxation for seven estates in the area dating back to 1539.

The modern city of Jyväskylä that we know today was founded by Czar Nicholas I of Russia on 22 March, 1837. The city center was laid out in a grid pattern. Since its founding, the city has sprawled beyond its city center, with population continuing to increase by a rate of about a thousand every year.
