More on Kendal

The history of Kendal goes back to at least the 11th century, as it was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the early days it was known as Kirkbie Kendal, meaning "village with a church in the valley of the River Kent".

Kendal developed from its high street, with fortified alleyways called yards branching off it. In the medieval period it was a center for the manufacture of woolen goods. There are several castles built in Kendal, including Kendal Castle, which belonged to the Parr family.

Today Kendal has evolved into a tourism center. It is best known for Kendal mint cake, a glucose-based confectionery that has become a souvenir purchase for visitors. The town is also known for tobacco products, particularly snuff, produced in Kendal since 1792.
