As with many towns in Ireland, Kilkenny began as a monastic settlement. It was established in the early part of the sixth century, when a church was built here and dedicated to St Canice. It becomes today's St Canice's Cathedral. The cathedral is today the seat of the Church of Ireland, while the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop is at St Mary's Cathedral.

Kilkenny experiences an oceanic climate. The warmest months are July and August, when the average high temperature rises to 20°C. Coldest month is January, when the average low drops to 1°C. October receives the most rain, with 86 mm.

  1. Bennettsbridge
    Village located 8 km to the south of Kilkenny that is famous for producing ceramics.

  2. Black Abbey
    Dominican abbey founded in 1225. Part of it functioned as a courthouse in the 16th century, before reverting to a working monastery later on.

  3. Dunmore Cave
    Limestone caves located to the north of Kilkenny featuring a number of interesting formations.

  4. Kilkenny Castle
    Castle built in the 1190s that belonged to the Butler family for centuries until 1967, when it was donated to the nation, and now open to the public.

  5. St Canice's Cathedral
    A hilltop cathedral now in the neighbourhood of Kilkenny once known as Englishtown, where most of the civic buildings are located.

  6. St John's Church
    Officially the Church of St John the Evangelist, a church built in the early 20th century in the Gothic Revival style.

  7. St Mary's Cathedral
    The Roman Catholic cathedral for the Diocese of Ossory, the main Catholic church in Kilkenny.
