As with many towns in Ireland, Kilkenny began as a monastic settlement. It was established in the early part of the sixth century, when a church was built here and dedicated to St Canice. It becomes today's St Canice's Cathedral. The cathedral is today the seat of the Church of Ireland, while the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop is at St Mary's Cathedral.Kilkenny experiences an oceanic climate. The warmest months are July and August, when the average high temperature rises to 20°C. Coldest month is January, when the average low drops to 1°C. October receives the most rain, with 86 mm.
