Knaresborough is a historic market town in Harrogate district, in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the River Nidd, it is about 4 miles to the east of Harrogate town center, and has a population of 15,000 people (2012 estimate).

More on Knaresborough

Knaresborough dates back to Norman times. It was listed in Domesday Book of 1086 as Chenaresburg. In around 1100 Knaresborough Castle was built, and the town developed around it. Around the same time St John's Church was also established.

Knaresborough had a market operating since as early as 1206, even though it was only granted a market charter in 1310 by King Edward II. This market is still being held every Wednesday.

From London take the A1(M) motorway to Junction 47, then continue west on the A59 road till you reach Knaresborough.

  1. Knaresborough Castle
    Ruins of castle overlooking the River Nidd. It was built by the Normans around 1100.

  2. Mother Shipton's Petrifying Well and Cave
    Well which give objects a stone like appearance if left in there for a long time, due to high mineral deposits. The cave is near the well. Mother Shipton is an English soothsayer whose real name is Ursula Southeil (1488-1561).
