Kuopio (map) is the ninth biggest city in Finland. It is located in Northern Savonia, on the central part of the country. Surrounded by Lake Kallavesi, Kuopio has a land area covering 1,597 sq km (616.8 sq mi) and a population of 97,000 (2011 estimate).

Kuopio is famous within Finland for a delicacy, the Finnish fish pastry Kalakukko, made by baking fish inside a loaf of rye bread. The local dialect is called Savo.

A unique feature of Kuopio is that it has a network of pedestrian and cycle street alternating with the city streets. This was laid as early as 1776, when the town was planned, originally created as a fire barrier to prevent fire from spreading, as the houses were built mostly of wood.
July is the warmest month in Kuopio, when the temperature rises to 21.4°C (70.5°F). February is extremely cold, with average low temperature of -13.4°C (7.9°F). August receives the most rain, at 80.2 mm (3.157 in).
Kuopio was established in 1653 by Governor Peter Brahe, however, the official date is recognized as 17 November, 1775. That was when King Gustav III of Sweden ordered its founding. Since then, a number of neighboring municipalities have been absorbed by Kuopio including Kuopion maalaiskunta in 1969, Riistavesi in 1973, Vehmersalmi in 2005 and Karttula in 2011.
