More on La Ceiba

La Ceiba experiences a tropical rainforest climate. Temperature is quite uniform. June is the hottest month, registering average highs of 31.1°C (88°F). January and February are the coldest months, with average lows of 20.6°C (69°F). Rain is heaviest in December, at 401 mm (15.8 in).

The city of La Ceiba was founded in 1872 by Manuel Hernandez. He built a shack under the giant ceiba tree that grew near the old dock. The tree unfortunately fell into the sea recently, in 2007. The town was made a municipality in 1877. In the early days, La Ceiba was a farming town where the people grew bananas and pineapples for export.

Agricultural exports continue to play an important role in the economy of La Ceiba, which has the second biggest port in Honduras after Puerto Cortes. In recent years, tourism has played an increasingly prominent role in the city's economy, which results in the city paying more attention to improving its recreational areas and nightlife.

In addition to the sights within town, La Ceiba acts as the gateway to the many national parks and nature reserves within its vicinity. Perhaps the best known is Pico Bonito National Park, with the 2435-meter Pico Bonito, or "beautiful peak".

The busiest time in La Ceiba is Semana Santa, or Holy Week. This is particularly true during the feast day honoring Saint Isidore, which takes place on the third Saturday in May. That's when you can see street processions and floats.

Visiting La Ceiba

You can fly to Golosón International Airport (LCE), located to the west of La Ceiba. The airport receives flights from Tegucigalpa as well as from Cancún, Brus Laguna, Grand Cayman, Guanaja Island, Puerto Lempira, Roatan, San Pedro Sula and Utila Island, among others.
