More on La Plata

La Plata holds the distinction of being the first entirely planned city in Argentina. Founded in 1882, the city was laid out by French architect Pierre Benoit. It occupies a square area covered by broad boulevards laid out in a grid pattern, creating 23 city plazas. At the heart of the city is the main square from which two main avenues emerge running north-south and east-west.

La Plata was where Juan Domingo Perón married Eva Duarte in 1945. In 1952, the city was renamed Eva Perón, but it reverted to its original name in 1955. The city today has a developed economy dominated by manufacturing and services.
