Lancashire is bordered by Cumbria to the north, North Yorkshire to the northeast, West Yorkshire to the east, Manchester to the southwest and Merseyside to the south, with the Irish Sea to the east.

The highest point in Lancashire is the 626 m (2,057 ft) Gragareth. The rivers in Lancashire flow west to empty into the Irish Sea. The main rivers include the Ribble, Wyre and Lune.

Lancashire experienced rapid development during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century as a major commercial and industrial region. Hundreds of mills were built here to manufacture cotton. Most of the towns in the area were major cotton mill towns, including Accrington, Blackburn, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Darwen, Nelson, Colne and Burnley. Blackpool is the local tourist destination for the surrounding region.
