Larnaca (Greek: Λάρνακα) is the third largest city in Cyprus after Nicosia and Limassol. Located on the southern coast of the island, it has a population of 72,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is today a commercial port and tourist destination. It is also home to the largest airport in Cyprus.

August is the hottest month in Larnaca. That's when the average high temperature rises to 32.7°C (90.3°F). Coldest month is February, when the average low temperature drops to 6.9°C (44.4°F). December is the wettest month in Larnaca, receiving 94.6 mm (3.72 in) of precipitation.

Larnaca dates back to the 14th century BC. It was founded by Mycenaean-Achaean Greeks. The city during ancient times was known as Kition. The city is prone to earthquake, having suffered a number of them over the ages.

The political situation in Cyprus has worked to the benefit of Larnaca, where the loss of the Port of Famagusta as well as the closure of the Nicosia International Airport all helped to divert port and air activities to Larnaca.

Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is the largest airport in Cyprus. It receives flights from Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Donetsk, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Kiev, London-Heathrow, London-Stansted, Minsk, Moscow, Nuremberg, Odessa, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Rome, Saint Petersburg, Sofia, Teheran, Tel Aviv, Thessaloniki, Vienna, Yerevan and Zürich, among others. Places of Interest in Larnaca

  1. Acropolis
    Situated at the top of a hill, immediately behind the Archaeological Museum, the acropolis is yet another of Larnaca's archaeological sites.

  2. Agia Faneromeni
    A subterranean chapel that probably dates back to the Phoenician period. The chapel is famous for its healing properties, with many sick devotees having been cured after performing a ritual of circling it twice and then leaving behind a scrap of clothing or a lock of hair.

  3. Agios Lazaros Church (Church of St Lazarus)
    Church in Old Larnaka built in the early 10th century. Its design reveals eastern and western architectural elements.

  4. Amphitheater
    This open-air arena is still being used for performances, particularly during the July Festival.

  5. Aqueduct
    The remains of an aqueduct can still be seen on the outskirts of Larnaca, along the road leading towards Limassol.

  6. Archaeological Museum
    Museum with a collection of artifacts from vessels to sculptures and vases.

  7. Büyük Cami
    The Grand Mosque of Larnaca was originally the Church of the Holy Cross. Now it is used mostly by Muslim visitors from the Middle East.

  8. Byzantine Museum
    Entered via Agios Lazaros Church compound, this museum exhibits items related to the Orthodox faith such as icons and Bibles.

  9. Kition
    This is the ancient city, today a collection or archaeological excavations and ruins dating back to the 13th century BC.

  10. Larnaca Beaches
    Larnaca has a number of beaches including the municipal beach, which is beside the Finikoudes promenade.

  11. Larnaca Fort and Medieval Museum
    The fort dates back to 1625. It was built by the Turks over the site of a medieval castle that was destroyed two centuries earlier. It now houses a museum exhibiting arms and armor from the Turkish period.

  12. Larnaca Harbor
    Larnaca has a fishing harbor with marina and coastal promenade. This is a good place to go for a stroll.

  13. Mycenaean Site
    Archaeological site near the foreigners' cemetery. The defence walls were built earlier, during the late Bronze Age, and reenforced by the Mycenaeans.

  14. Natural History Museum
    Museum located in the muncipal park. It houses items related to the natural environment, including speciments of insects, animals and plants.

  15. Pierides Foundation Museum
    Museum housing the largest private collection in Cyprus. This includes some 2,500 pieces of relics collected by five generations of the Pierides family.
