Lauterbrunnen is a small village in the Interlaken-Oberhasli district, in Bern canton, Switzerland. It covers 164.4 sq km (63.5 sq mi) and has a population of 2,500 people (2011 estimate).

Lauterbrunnen is situated 795 m (2,608 ft) above sea level within the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the world's deepest U-shaped valley. As such, it is a village surrounded by breathtaking beauty. The village dates back to its first mention in 1240.

Running through Lauterbrunnen is a glacier river, Weisse Lütschine, which gets its water from the melting snow. Once a year it would overflow due to the rapid melting of snow. The village also has a couple of mighty waterfalls which you can visit when you explore the surrounding areas.

Visiting Lauterbrunnen

Visitors to Lauterbrunnen take the train from Interlaken. There is a narrow-gauge train from the Interlaken-Ost railway station. You need to hold a Swiss Pass to take the train for free; Eurail and Inter-Rail passes are not valid.
