Lillehammer (map), best known as the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, is a city in Oppland County in southeastern Norway. The city center, with its beautiful 19th century wooden houses, is located on the northern part of Lake Mjøsa, surrounded by mountains. It covers 477 sq km (184.2 sq mi) and has a population of 27,000.

Human habitation in the area surrounding Lillehammer has been traced back to the Norwegian Iron Age. The earliest documentation of a settlement in the area was in 1390. It evolved into a market town by the 19th century. The town of Lillehammer was established as a municipality in 1838.Lillehammer experiences a dry inland climate. July is the warmest month, when the average high temperature rises to 19°C (66°F). On the other hand, January temperatures may drop to -12°C (10°F). August is the wettest month here, receiving 90 mm (3.54 in) of precipitation.
