Lillehammer (map), best known as the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, is a city in Oppland County in southeastern Norway. The city center, with its beautiful 19th century wooden houses, is located on the northern part of Lake Mjøsa, surrounded by mountains. It covers 477 sq km (184.2 sq mi) and has a population of 27,000.

Human habitation in the area surrounding Lillehammer has been traced back to the Norwegian Iron Age. The earliest documentation of a settlement in the area was in 1390. It evolved into a market town by the 19th century. The town of Lillehammer was established as a municipality in 1838.

Lillehammer experiences a dry inland climate. July is the warmest month, when the average high temperature rises to 19°C (66°F). On the other hand, January temperatures may drop to -12°C (10°F). August is the wettest month here, receiving 90 mm (3.54 in) of precipitation.

Visitors to Lillehammer go by way of Oslo. There are trains between the two cities. Journey to Lillehammer takes 2 hours.

  1. Bjerkebæk
    Former home of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Sigrid Undset, who lived in isolation, surrounded by her books. Her house was relocated from Gudbrandsalen to Bjerkebæk, and now open to the public.

  2. Hafjell Alpine Center
    One of the largest skiing complexes in the country.

  3. Hunderfossen Adventure Park
    A cultural theme park based on Norwegian folk and fairy tales, featuring trolls, fairytale castle and more.

  4. Lillehammer Kunstmuseum
    Museum celebrating the superb artwork of 19th century Norwegian artist Fredrik Collett and others who painted the scenes in Lillehammer.

  5. Lilleputthammer
    A park to view Lillehammer in miniature.

  6. Maihaugen
    This is the largest museums of farming culture in Norway. It was founded by dentist Anders Sandvig in 1887 grew to become a sprawling complex of 175 buildings showcasing the rural way of life.
