More on Lincoln
As with the rest of the British Isles, it experiences a maritime climate. Summers are cool while winters mild. July is the warmest month, with average high temperature of 21°C (69.8°F) while January and February are the coldest month, when average low temperature drops to 1°C (33.8°F).
The history of Lincoln goes back to prehistory, when an Iron Age settlement was established there, perhaps in the 1st century BC. When the Romans occupied the area, they built a fortress here. It overlooked the lake which was formed by the widening of the River Witham. Under the Romans, the settlement of Colonia Domitiana Lindensium was established. The name evolved into the Old English Lincylene, and from there comes Lincoln.

Lincoln Cathedral was built in the 11th century. After an earthquake of 1185, the cathedral was rebuilt with the tallest spire in Europe. Standing at 525 ft (160 m), it was the tallest man-made structure in the world, surpassing even the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Sadly, the spire collapsed in 1549 and was never rebuilt to that height again.
Today Lincoln has a developing tourism industry. Among the attractions in the city includes its cathedral, castle, the Bishop's Palace and its numerous historic buildings.
