Ljubljana is the capital and biggest city in Slovenia. Located at the center of the country, it covers 163.8 sq km (63.2 sq mi) and has a population of 272,000 (2011 estimate). Ljubljana is 140 km (87 mi) to the west of Zagreb and 250 km (160 mi) to the east of Venice. The city is approximately 295 m (968 ft) above sea level, while the highest part in the city is Janče Hill, at 794 m (2,605 ft).

Ljublana is on an alluvial plain known as the Ljubljana Basin. It is between the Alps mountains and Slovenian karst topography. The city observes the Central European Time, which is an hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1) and two hours ahead during Daylight Saving Time in summer. The phone area code is 01.
Ljublana's climate is classified as oceanic, and close to humid subtropical. Its warmest month is July, when the average high temperature reaches 27°C (81°F). The coldest months are January and February, with the average low temperature dropping to -4°C (25°F). Snow can be expected from December to March. Wettest month is October, which receives 151 mm (5.94 in) of precipitation.

The Ljubljana area has been inhabited since at least 2000 BC by Celtic tribes. The Romans established a military camp here in 50 BC. The settlement known as Ljubljana dates from 1112 AD, based on a parchment dating from then that mentions it. The city was conquered by Bohemia in 1270, and then eight years later by the Habsburg monarchy.
Over the centuries Ljubljana had been devastated at least twice by earthquake, in 1511 and 1895. Ljubljana was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of the First World War, when it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. This led to it being made the capital of the Yugoslav province of Drava Banovina in 1929. After the Second World War, Ljubljana became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia until Slovenia seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991, when it becomes the capital of the independent state of Slovenia.

The Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is the main airport serving Slovenia. It receives flights mainly from major cities in Europe. Low-cost carriers EasyJet and Vueling Airlines also flies to Ljubljana from London Stansted, Milan Malpensa Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Barcelona.
From the airport, you can take a bus (€4.10, journey time 50 min) or a minibus (€5.00, 30 min) to reach the main bus and train terminal in downtown Ljubljana. Metered taxi will cost you about €30-€40, depending on destination.

Exploring Ljubljana
The Old Town of Ljubljana is sufficiently compact to be explored on foot. The main form of public transport in the city are the public buses. Stored-value cards can be purchased for riding the buses. They cost €2 and are available from newspaper kiosks in the city. These cards can be loaded with amounts ranging from €1 to €50.
