More on Łódź

Although Łódź was first mentioned in history in 1332, it remained a small village for hundreds of years. Its population even declined from 600 in the 16th century to just 190 in 1810. Then, as industrialization arrived in Łódź, the population began to grow massively. In 1850 it had 15,000 inhabitants, but by 1914, this was risen to half a million.

The rapid growth of Łódź brought mixed blessing, among this a disparity of income, which is apparent from the contrast in its architecture. The city has fine mansions of the wealthy as well as ramshackle flats of the working class.

The industry that spurred Łódź's growth was textile. After bringing prosperity and growth to the city for over a hundred years, the textile industry finally went into decline in 1990. The downturn was so tremendous that not a single major textile factory in Łódź survived. Filling the vacuum created by the fall of textile are other industries such as logistics and services. Foreign companies also moved in to take advantage of its low labor cost.

Łódź is today a modernizing city developing itself as a tourist destination. Among the highlights of the city include the five-kilometer Piotrkowska Street, touted as the longest shopping street in the world. The city also has the biggest public park in Europe and an impressive number of museums.
