Louth has been inhabited at least since the Norman period. In 1430 work began on the construction of the local parish church, the St James' Church, Louth. Its spire standing at 90 m (295 ft) is the tallest Anglican parish church spire in England. Among parish churches, the spire is exceeded only by that of the Roman Catholic Church of St Walburge in Preston.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries brought on by King Henry VIII following his break with the Roman Catholic Church resulted in a protest in Louth, known as the Lincolnshire Rising. It was also in support of a plan suggested by Thomas Cromwell for the country to enjoy religious autonomy and separation from the king's supremacy over matters of religion. The uprising began at St James Church in 1536, and became the forerunner of the Pilgrimage of Grace, another rising that took place in York that same year.
