Lugano (Lombard: Lügàn) is the ninth biggest city in Switzerland. The city is located in a shallow inlet on the northern shore of Lake Lugano, where the river Cassarate enters the lake. It is in the canton of Ticino, which is on the southernmost part of Switzerland that protrudes into Italy. As such, Italian is the predominant language here.

More on Lugano

Lugano covers 32 sq km (12 sq mi), at an average elevation of 273 m (896 ft). It has a population of 55,000. The city is a popular tourist destination, often called the Monte Carlo of Switzerland, as many celebrities make it their residence. It has a number of tourist sites which I shall list down below.

The Lugano area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The city itself is said to have been founded in AD 724. This is based on documents discovered, which unfortunately we can't say whether is authentic. Nevertheless, it is with some surety that Lugano has developed into a market town by AD 984. It is known by its present name since 1189.

In modern times, Lugano experienced rapid population growth, particularly from 1880 to 1910, when its population more than doubled. However by the 1970s, population growth has stalled, and even fell, as people moved away from the city center to live in the suburban areas.

Visiting Lugano

Lugano Airport (LUG) receives flights mostly from cities in Switzerland. It may be more practical to go there by train. Journey from Zürich is 3 hours, from Basel 3 and a half hours and from Milan, about an hour.
