More on Maastrict

Maastrict is located on a section of the Netherlands that protrudes south between Belgium in the west and Germany in the easty, straddling the Meuse River. The city is in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, which includes the cities of Aachen, Hasselt and Liège.

With a history going back to Roman times, Maastrict is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network. It often calls itself as the oldest city in the Netherlands, although the title is a matter of opinion betwee Maastrict and its contender, Nijmegen. Although Nijmegen received city rights under the Romans, the settlement at Maastrict is considerably older.

However, it too was severely devastated during the Second World War, and had to rebuild many of its important building when peace returned.
