Evidence of human presence shows that the area around Maidstone has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The Romans also left their mark in the area, as evidenced in the remains of a Roman settlement and villas. Maidstone received its first town charter in 1549. It was then briefly revoked and reissued in 1551, when it was created as a borough.Due to its location on the River Medway, Maidstone developed as the main town for the surrounding region. During the 18th century a number of industries were established here including paper milling and stone quarrying.
Today Maidstone is a modern town. It ranks as one of the top five shopping centers in South East England. Among the major shopping malls in town includes The Mall Maidstone and Fremlin Walk.
