Maldon was first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in AD 913, where it appeared as Maeldun. The area has however been inhabited from as early as the fifth century, and archaeological excavations have uncovered imported pottery in the area.

During medieval times, Maldon was one of only two towns in Essex, the other being Colchester. In the 10th century it was attacked a couple of times by Vikings. The Vikings were beaten off in the raid of 924, but they returned in 991 and managed to defeat the defenders. In return for not sacking the town, they were given a tribute. The statue of the slained local hero Byrhtnoth commemorate the 991 Battle of Maldon.

From London, take the A12 road to Chelmsford. There, continue east on the A414 road past Danbury, and then follow the A414 road (Maldon Road) until you arrive in the town.
