More on Market Drayton

Market Drayton dates back to at least the 17th century. It has been called differently during different times in history. Until 1695 it was known simply as Drayton. Then in 1868 it was known as Drayton in Hales. Most of the buildings in town date from the 17th century, as a major fire destroyed almost everything earlier than that. As a reminder of the fire, a bell is hung at the Buttercross in the town's market square. It is to be rung if ever there is another fire.

Market Drayton is today a small English town. Its main industry is producing sausages. The sausage factory started in 1965 is today owned by the Kerry Group. It remains the largest employer in town. Other local products include yogurt and gingerbread.
