Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire, England. This town of 11,000 people (2012 estimate) is located on the southeastern edge of the Peak District, and is part ofthe Sheffield City Region. It is about 14 km (9 mi) to the west of Chesterfield.

Located by the banks of the River Derwent, Matlock began as a spa town comprising a collection of villages including Matlock Town, Matlock Green, Matlock Bridge and Matlock Bank. It prospered from its thermal springs which were discovered in 1698.

The hydrotherapy industry was big business in Matlock, particularly in the 19th century, when as many as twenty such spas were built, most of them along Matlock Bank. Today is a quiet town with a number of tourist attractions and historic buildings.

Visiting Matlock

Take the M1 motorway until Exit 28, where you continue west on the A38. At the Watchorn Roundabout, head north on the A61 and then turn west on the A615 road. Continue on the A615 until you arrive at Matlock.

  1. County Hall
    The former Smedley's Hydro building, it is today the offices of the Derbyshire County Council. The building is Grade II listed.

  2. Old Methodist Church
    Church of the Primitive Methodist congregation founded in 1838.

    Roman Catholic church dating to 1883.

  4. Riber Castle
    19th century country house on a hill overlooking Matlock.
