Mazatlán (map) is a city in the state of Sinaloa, in Mexico. The city overlooks the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula. The city covers 3,068.5 sq km (1,184.75 sq mi) and has a population of 438,000 (2011 estimate).

The name Mazatlán comes from the local Nahuatl language meaning "land of deer". The area was inhabited by native tribes when the Spanish arrived. It was nothing more than a cluster of huts until the early 19th century.Today Mazatlán depends on tourism and fishing as the mainstay of its economy. The city has the second largest fishing fleet in Mexico where the main catch are shrimps and tuna. The tourism industry in Mazatlán centers of the beach and beach-related recreation. There are a good number of hotels, restaurants and bars in the city. Its coastal promenade, Malecón, is one of the longest in the world, at 21 kilometers.
