The name Monte Carlo means "Charles Mount". It was given in reference to Prince Charles III (1818-1889). Monte Carlo has a population of 3,500, mostly the very rich. Service workers usually commute from outside Monaco to this area due to the exorbitant cost of real estate here.

Visiting Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is small enough to the explored on foot. To reach it, you can take a bus which connects the city with Nice and other places in France. There is an express shuttle bus connecting the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) with drop-off at various major hotels across Monaco.

  1. Jardin Exotique (Exotic Garden)
    One of the best botanic gardens in Europe, with a vast collection of tropical and subtropical plants.

  2. Le Grand Casino
    The most famous landmark in Monte Carlo, built in 1878 by the architect of the Paris Opéra.

  3. Monaco Cathedral
    Romanesque-Byzantine-style church built in 1875 on the site dating back to the 13th century.

  4. Monaco-Ville
    The heart of Monte Carlo, with most of the attractions of the city.

  5. Musée Océanographique (Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium)
    Museum established by Prince Albert I in 1910 showcasing various marine life, including rare species.

  6. Palais Princier
    The seat of government of the principality since the 13th century. This is where you can observe the changing of the guard at 11:55 am every day.
