More on Morpeth

The settlement at Morpeth began as a river crossing on the Wansbeck. It is over a thousand years old. Following the Norman Conquest, it became the possession of the Merlay family. In 1138 Ranulf de Merlay built Newminster Abbey.

Under Roger de Merlay, Morpeth received its market charter from King John, allowing a market to be held there on Wednesday. It is still being held today.

In recent years, Morpeth came into the news due to a massive flood that hit in in September 2008. It affected some 1,000 homes in the area.
