Although the area around Murcia has been settled since Roman times, the city that stands today was established around AD 825 by Abd ar-Rahman II, the Emir of Al-Andalus. The city achieved much prosperity in the 18th century based on its silk industry, resulting in the construction of many of the city's churches and landmark buildings.

The main tourist sights in Murcia includes its cathedral and baroque architecture. Perhaps the most famous artist from Murcia is sculptor Francisco Salzillo (1707-1783).
