More on Nancy

Nancy is one of the oldest cities in France. The area around Nancy has been settled as early as 800 BC. In AD 1050, Gerard, the Duke of Lorraine, built a fortified town here and called it Nanciacum. It was conquered by Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century.

At the heart of Nancy today is Place Stanislas, the square built for the king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and duke of Lorraine, Stanisław Leszczyński. The square is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Going to Nancy

You can reach Nancy by taking the TGV train from Paris. The journey takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. You can also take the train from Strasbourg in 1 hour 15 minutes, and from Dijon in 2 hours 30 minutes.

Exploring Nancy

Most of the sights within the city center can be reached on foot. For greater distances, there are trams and buses that you can take. You can buy the bus ticket directly from the driver for €1.20 while for the trams, there are vending machines at each stop.

    Arch at the northern end of Place Stanislas.

  2. Eglise et Couvent des Cordeliers et Musée Régional des Arts et Traditions Populaires
    Church in which the dukes of Lorraine were buried. Adjoining monastery convered into a museum of folklore, furniture, costumes and crafts.

  3. Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy
    Museum of the Ecole de Nancy with exhibits covering furniture, fabrics, jewellery and glassware.

  4. Musée des Beaux Arts
    Museum with a remarkable collection of 14th to the 20th century European art.

  5. Musée Historique Lorraine
    The museum of the history of Lorraine, with collections from archaeological finds to sculptures and paintings.

  6. Place de la Carriere
    Tree-lined square with famous buildings around it.

  7. Place Stanislas
    Most renowned landmark of Nancy, a pedestrianized square in the heart of the city.
