Nassau is the capital and largest city in the Bahamas. Located on the island of New Providence, it covers 207 sq km (80 sq mi), and has a population of 250,000 people (2011 estimate), representing 70% of the population of the Bahamas. Nassau spreads over the eastern half of New Providence.

Nassau was originally called Charles Town. The town was razed by the Spanish in 1684. In 1695 a new town was developed and named Nassau by Bahamas property owner Nicholas Trott, in honor of the Prince of Orange-Nassau, who became King William III of Great Britain.Nassau experiences a tropical monsoon climate. Warmest month is August, when the average high temperature rises to 32.1°C (89.8°F). Coldest months are January and February, when the average low temperature drops to 17.3°C (63.1°F). August gets the heaviest rain, at 235.7 mm (9.28 in).

Visiting Nassau
Nassau was established in 1650 by the British and was originally named Charles Town. That initial settlement was razed by the Spanish in 1684. In 1695 the British rebuilt the settlement and renamed it Nassau, in honor of William III from the House of Orange-Nassau, the Dutch Stadtholder who at that time was also the King of England, Scotland and Ireland.In 1713 many English pirates made it their base, among them Thomas Barrow, Benjamin Hornigold, Charles Vane, John Rackham and Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Eventually the British authorities began to clamp down on pirate activities, and by 1718, they had regained control over Nassau, appointing Captain Woodes Rogers as the Royal governor.

Today Nassau has transformed itself into a vacation destination. It has a number of resorts, particularly within the Cable Beach area. The city comes alive during its festivals, the biggest of which being Junkanoo, a street parade that takes place from 26 December until 1 January.
