Visiting Nassau
Nassau was established in 1650 by the British and was originally named Charles Town. That initial settlement was razed by the Spanish in 1684. In 1695 the British rebuilt the settlement and renamed it Nassau, in honor of William III from the House of Orange-Nassau, the Dutch Stadtholder who at that time was also the King of England, Scotland and Ireland.
In 1713 many English pirates made it their base, among them Thomas Barrow, Benjamin Hornigold, Charles Vane, John Rackham and Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Eventually the British authorities began to clamp down on pirate activities, and by 1718, they had regained control over Nassau, appointing Captain Woodes Rogers as the Royal governor.
