Newton Abbot is a market town in Teignbridge District, in southeastern Devon, England. Located on the River Teign, it has a population of around 24,000 people (2012 estimate).

The area around Newton Abbot has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Based on the discovery of coins, it is evident that the Romans also occupied the area. The town received its charter to hold a weekly market around 1251. This helped it to grow into a major town. There were two separate communities in the area, Newton Abbot and Newton Bushel, each with its own market. These were eventually merged in 1633.Newton Abbot was a center for the wool and textile industry. This was particularly so in the 18th century, when it had wollen pills and trades related to the industry. The wool and leather industry were the mainstays of the town's economy for much of the 18th and 19th century, but began a gradual decline in the 20th century. The last of the wool business closed down in 1972.
Today Newton Abbot is well known for its racecourse as well as for its stock car track, which is located at a corner of the racecourse.
