Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia occupying the central northern portion of the Australian continent. The Northern Territory covers an area of 1,420,970 sq km (548,640 sq mi) with bodies of water accounting for 5% of the area. The highest point in the territory is Mount Zeil, at 1,531 m (5,023 ft).
The Northern Territory is bordered by Queensland to the east, South Australia to the south and Western Australia to the west. On the northern side is the coast of the Timur Sea, Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The Northern Territory has a population of approximately 230,000 people (2010 estimate). Its capital as well as largest city is Darwin. It is located within the Australian Central Standard Time, which is +9 ½ GMT. It does not observe Daylight Saving Time. The postal abbreviation for the Northern Territory is NT.

By Plane
Darwin International Airport (DRW) is the main airport serving the Northern Territory. It has a separate international and domestic terminal. The second biggest airport is the Alice Springs Airport (ASP), which is a domestic airport that also receives international chartered flights.
By Road
The Northern Territory can be reached from South Australia on the Stuart Highway (Explorer's Way), from Queensland on the Barkly Highway (Overlander's Way) and from Western Australia on the Victoria Highway (Savannah Way) and Butine Highway.

Travel within the Northern Territory
There are domestic flights connecting Darwin with Alice Springs and Yulara. There are also train services running north-south through the Northern Territory. You can also explore it on its five themed highways: the Explorer's Way, Savannah Way, Red Centre Way, Binns Track and Nature's Way.
