Novosibirsk (Russian: Новосибирск, map) is the largest city in Siberia and third largest in Russia behind Moscow and St Petersburg. Located in the southern part of the Russian Federation, it occupies 477 sq km (184 sq mi) and has a population of 1.5 million people. Novosibirsk observes the Omsk Time (UTC+7).

Novosibirsk is the administrative capital of Novosibirsk Oblast as well as the Siberian Federal District. It is located on the banks of the Ob River. To the south of the city is the Ukok Plateau, which is part of the Golden Mountains of Altai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Novosibirsk experiences a humid continental climate. Summers here are warm while winters are bitterly cold. Warmest month is July, when the average high temperature reaches 25.7°C (78.3°F). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature can drop to -20.1°C (-4.2°F). Average temperature is below 0°C from November until April. Rain is heaviest in July, at 72 mm (2.28 in).

Novosibirsk was founded in 1893 in anticipation of the Trans-Siberian Railway line passing that way across the River Ob. It was originally named Novonikolayevsk (New Nicholas City), in honor of Saint Nicholas as well as the reigning tsar, Nicholas II. About a decade later, the Turkestan-Siberian Railway was also completed through the novonikolayevsk, increasing its importance as a transport hub.
The growth of Novonikolayevsk was derailed by the outbreak of the Russian Civil War, which claimed thousands of lives in the city, not only through warfare, but also through the resulting epidemics of typhus and cholera. In 1921, the city under Lenin's New Economic Policy was given a new name, Novosibirsk, meaning New Siberian City.

Under Stalin, Novosibirsk grew to become the largest industrial center in Siberia, its economy supported by heavy industry, mining, metal processing, food processing and power generation. When its population surpassed a million on 2 September, 1962, it became the fastest city in the world to reach that milestone.
Visiting Novosibirsk
The Novosibirsk Tolmachevo Airport (OVB) is located in Ob, a suburb about 16 km from downtown Novosibirsk. The airport receives flights from Moscow, St Petersburg as well as Bangkok, Beijing, Dubai, Frankfurt, Ho Chi Minh City, Tashkent and Yerevan, among others. Arriving at the airport, take Bus 111 to the Novosibirsk Railway Station or Bus 112 to the Central Bus Terminus.You can also take the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow or Saint Petersburg to Novosibirsk. The Novosibirsk Railway Station is the biggest Russian railway station on the route. You can also take the train from Vladivostok, Ulaan Baator and Beijing from the other direction.
