Paderborn (map) is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It covers 179.38 sq km (69.26 sq mi) and has a population of 146,000. It was named after the river Pader, which emerges from springs near the Paderborn Cathedral. The city comprises a number of neighborhoods including Altenbeken, Bad Lippspringe, Borchen, Delbrück, Hövelhof, Lichtenau and Salzkotten.

Paderborn is towan an industrial city and home to a number of information technology company including Wincor Nixdorf (which belongs to Siemens), Deutsche Bahn, Flextronics, and Fujitsu, among others.

The city was founded as a bishopric by Charlemagne in AD 795. In 799 the Pope Leo III had to flee Rome to escape his enemies. He arrived in Paderborn where he met Charlemagne. Charlemagne helped Leo III be reinstated in Rome, and in return, he crowned him Holy Roman Emperor.

Paderborn once had the oldest university in Westphalia. It was founded by the Jesuits in 1614, but it closed in 1819. The university was re-established in 1972 as Universität-Gesamthochschule and today has 14,000 students.

Visiting Paderborn, Germany

The Paderborn Lippstadt Airport (PAD) is about 18 km (11 mi) from the city center. It receives flights from London Stansted and a number of destinations in Germany and Europe.

If coming by road, take the A2 or A44 expressways and exit to A33 which continues to Paderborn.
