Pensioni in Italy
Pensioni refers to one- and two-star accommodation providers in Italy. Although the term has fallen out of official use in Italy, it is still the popular name for such family-run inns and guesthouses.
The pensioni is where you get a glimpse of life with the Italians up close. The rooms are usually immaculately clean and the service friendly. If you get a pensione (singular for pensioni) in an old building, it comes with its own charm and character that will not be easily duplicated. On the other hand, the plumbic may be erratic and the rooms not well lit.

Some pensioni offer bathroom-attached bedrooms, though these are usually fitted with a shower than a bathtub. As pensioni do not have a 24-hour front desk, it is advisable to informa if you are going to be out late. Similarly, you may not be able to check in if you arrive past a certain time.
Apart from pensioni, you can also get rooms at inns, called locanda. In addition to a place to sleep, they also offer good Italian food. The name locanda is becoming obscure, as often the word pensioni is used throughout Italy. Nonetheless, the term may appear especially in central and northern Italy.
