Pereira is a city in western Colombia. It covers 628 sq km (242.5 sq mi) and has a population of 576,000 people (2011 estimate). It is the provincial capital of Risaralda department within the coffee producing region of the country.

Pereira was inhabited by the Quimbaya tribe before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century. It was initially established as Cartago by Spanish conquistador Jorge Robledo and Diego de Mendoza in 1540. The settlement was relocated to its present site in 1691.

Pereira is 1,411 m (4,629 ft) above sea level. It is in a valley on the western Andes mountain. The high altitude gives the city a pleasant, cooler climate than the lowlands.

Visiting Pereira

The Matecaña International Airport (PEI) is the airport serving Pereira. It receives flights from Bogotá, Cali, Condoto, Medellín and Panama City, among others. Arriving at the airport, you can take a taxi to downtown. The trip takes about 20 minutes and costs approximately 8,000 COP.

Completed in 1998, this is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in South America. It was named after the Colombian president born in Pereira.
