Pilar was founded in 1779 by Pedro Melo de Portugal and was originally called Villa del Ñeembucú, after the river Arroyo Ñeembucú, a tributary to the Paraguay River. It was renamed Villa del Pilar four years later, in honor of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar) in Zaragoza, Spain.
